Metaphorical Terms in English in the Language of Nosology

Abstract

The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the functioning of metaphorical terms in the sphere of nosology in the English language. The objectives of the study include the identification of metaphorical terms of nosology in modern English, analysis of their semantics with the indication of spheres-sources of metaphorical transfer and groups of diseases they denote. The hypothesis of the article is that metaphorical terms of nosology sphere are connected with the general context of medical terminology, rely on nominations of human body organs, etc. The principles of implementing metaphorical transfer for creating terms are considered, and the source spheres of the metaphorical terms’ formation are characterized. The methodology of the research implies the study of the peculiarities of the formation of metaphorical terms of the sphere of nosology on the material of modern English.The article identifies and analyzes 55 examples of metaphorical terms of the sphere of nosology, which denote infectious diseases, diseases of the endocrine system, mental diseases, diseases of the nervous system, diseases of the visual organs, diseases of the respiratory system, anomalies of body development, otorhinolaryngological diseases, diseases of the heart, diseases of the respiratory system. In order to analyze the metaphorical terms, they are divided by source spheres, indicating the thematic affiliation of each unit considered, which allows us to show how exactly the metaphorical transfer was carried out.
