Abstract
Terminology of winter sports, like any other terminology, is a special system of vocabulary and requires detailed study from the standpoint of its word formation. The main resource for enriching the terminological volume of a language is its internal reserves. Consequently, replenishment of the vocabulary of the language of sports and, in particular, winter sports with new words occurs through the use of morphemes already existing in the language or their new combinations. It is known that there are many ways to form new words, the entire set of which can be divided into: morphological method, lexical-syntactic, lexical-semantic and morphological-semantic. The morphological method of vocabulary formation is the most productive and popular way of forming new words.
This scientific work examines morphological methods of word formation of sports terms of winter sports in English: affixal (prefixal, suffixal), compounding, conversion and abbreviations. According to the results of the study, compounding and conversion turned out to be the most effective methods. The author believes that knowledge of the main methods of morphological word formation of sports terms of winter sports will contribute to the effectiveness of the educational process, in the context of teaching English at the faculties of winter sports in a sports university. This knowledge will help students to comprehend the meanings of unfamiliar sports terms, develop and expand the ability to generalize, systematize and develop relationships between already known terms and those being studied. Understanding the patterns of word formation, the student will be able to more effectively intensify his own vocabulary.
